'This money will stop children going hungry this winter and I’m glad we have been able to step up and support schools in this way.”

The decision comes after Councillor Paul Doherty who runs Foodstock, put forward a motion before the Council in early October.

Cllr Doherty said: “There is currently a huge demand for school breakfast clubs to ensure that each child starts the day with a healthy meal and this £250,000 funding as part of the hardship scheme will support schools in delivering this alongside other anti-poverty measures.”Breakfast clubs are to be administered by The Education Authority across Belfast with funds awarded from the council.

Belfast was voted a “Right To Food city” last month joining cities such as Liverpool and Manchester in a fight to end food poverty by recognising the issue and calling on governments across the UK to take action.
