As reporter Nicole Wootton-Cane found out when she visited the family, ‘there is no space for a bearable existence’. Three of Cheryl’s children sleep with her on a makeshift bed on the floor of the living room. Clothes are stored behind the sofa. The family have lived like this since December and despite pleas to the council and First Choice Homes, they are yet to be given suitable accommodation. Oldham Council say they are working with the housing association to find Cheryl more suitable temporary accommodation - but there are currently 106 households on the waiting list for a five-bed property in the borough. In fact, none have been available since July 2021.
"First Choice Homes know all about the mould," she told Nicole. "They told me you need to open your windows. They said you have too much washing and drying but what else am I supposed to do?" First Choice Homes Oldham said they can’t comment on individual tenants but any ‘shortfall’ in services is acted on quickly.
Operation Safeguard A Channel 4 News investigation has revealed that police cells across Greater Manchester have been used to house prison inmates hundreds of times in recent months. The MoJ said Operation Safeguard was also used in 2006 and eases ‘exceptional capacity pressures caused in part by the barristers’ strike and the aftermath of the pandemic’. They said short-term measures - such as double occupancy of cells - have been implemented across the prison estate to expand capacity by 2,400 places since September.
Grove Medical Practice, run out of Timperley Medical Centre in Trafford, will shut its doors on September 30. The wider health centre is not affected. The surgery's 5,700 patients will be transferred to the village's three other practices - two of which operate in the same building. Lib Dem councillor Simon Lepori said the closure comes at a time when ‘GP waiting lists are spiralling out of control’ and people are facing record wait times for important treatments. "This is a poor approach to take towards the people of Timperley, who deserve better than this poor communication and uncertainty," he said.
Elizabeth Cameron, who chairs the panel, describes the tool as ‘intrusive and humiliating’ and says it contributes to ‘the harm faced by ethnically diverse communities who are disproportionately affected by racist policing’. “Stop and search is an example of the collective trauma endured by ethnically diverse people across Greater Manchester and the country,” she said.
As Charlotte Green reports, council bosses have agreed to ‘recommit’ to the development of a replacement new theatre in the borough at a cost of £24.5m, though the venue won’t open until 2026.
