The project has been ongoing since 2018 and fundraisers still need to bring in £90,000
The former Mayor of Newark is planning to jump out of a plane in order to raise funds for the A46 Lancaster Bomber sculpture. Laurence Goff, who stepped down as the town's mayor earlier this year, will be completing a skydive next year to raise funds for the Bomber County Gateway Trust.
The 73-year-old said: "I was at the Air Museum a month ago and I saw the display of the Lancaster Bomber and I felt inspired by that and I felt sorry that it was taking so long. I found out they were still struggling with the fundraising and the price of everything has gone up drastically, almost twice as much."Laurence feels it is important that we "remember their sacrifices" and how people fought then so we could enjoy our freedom today.
Diane Ablewhite, part of the Bomber County Gateway Trust fundraising team, said: "I'm full of admiration for Laurence doing this for us and we've really struggled the last few years. The pandemic took out two years of fundraising then the War in Ukraine and now the cost of living crisis. I've never known fundraising to be as difficult as it is at the moment.
The veterans who attended the event in 2018 included Johnny Johnson MBE, who was the last surviving of the Dambuster raids. He died in 2022 aged 101 at his home in Bristol, but lived for many years in Nottinghamshire, including Collingham and Langford.
