Manchester City fans came together to help local foodbanks instead of attending the Community Shield and there are more opportunities on the horizon.
Manchester City fans raised over £14,000 for local foodbanks with their boycott of the Community Shield.
Having followed the team everywhere last season, many supporters were left frustrated at the decision to hold the annual curtain raiser at 5.30pm on a Sunday at Wembley - especially when the FA Cup final in June had worked so well as a Saturday 3pm fixture.
City fans decided to turn the negative of the schedule into a positive, with the 1894 supporter group encouraging donations to the MCFC Fans Foodbank Support instead. The reaction was impressive, and helped further by a screening of the match at a city centre location - fans were also encouraged to bring food and the 450 Blues who attended carried 350kg of food with them - that saw a generous donation from Liverpool and Everton fans through the Fans Supporting Foodbanks group.
A total of more than £14,000 including gift aid is enough to cover the cost for Manchester Central Foodbanks of food purchases for the entire summer. That will allow them to have deeper reserves for the winter, when demand will be greater. It also helps the foodbanks through a time when the City fans have not been collecting because the season has been over. They will be back for the first home game of the season though, at.5.
