Findings emerging from years of 'Conversations' described as “priceless”

Children and young people from the Shankill have opened up about their hopes and aspirations in a ground-breaking project aimed at shaping the West Belfast community’s future.

The ‘free flow of genuine information’ that emerged from the young people saw them share their hopes - like an 18-year-old girl who told them “I hope to be happy; I will Another positive outlook emerged from a girl aged 16, whose pathfinder summarised her thoughts as: “Wants to be involved in youth work . Go to University. Very positive about living in Shankill. Has had work experience with GSP [Greater Shankill Partnership] and is involved in local youth group. Have a partner in 20 years and children as feels life is hard for her mother who is single parent.”

The authors said that “the CYP did draw significant inspiration from role models in their community”, but added “these were often limited to the exposure they had to role models in schools and local community organisations”.

U.S. adolescents’ attitudes toward school, social connection, media use, and mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic: Differences as a function of gender identity and school contextU.S. adolescents’ attitudes toward school, social connection, media use, and mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic: Differences as a function of gender identity and school contextThe COVID-19 pandemic changed school contexts and social opportunities dramatically for adolescents around the world. Thus, certain adolescents may have been more susceptible to the stress of the pandemic as a function of differences in schooling. We present data from 1256 United States adolescents (ages 14–16) to examine how the 2020–2021 school context (in-person, hybrid, or virtual) related to feelings of school satisfaction and success, social connection, mental health, and media use. We also examine differences as a function of gender identity. Results demonstrate that school context, particularly in-person compared to virtual schooling, was related to higher school satisfaction and academic success, stronger feelings of social connection and inclusion, lower levels of anxiety and depression, and less problematic media use. Interestingly, adolescents did seem to use media as a tool to support social connection when in hybrid or virtual school contexts, but they also reported higher rates of problematic media use, thus suggesting that media use needs to be examined more carefully to understand its role as a potential protective mechanism for adolescents’ social connection and mental health. These findings provide baseline information about how schools’ responses to the COVID-19 pandemic may have created disparities among youth. These findings have implications for current school interventions.

TREM2 and microglia exosomes: a potential highway for pathological tau - Molecular NeurodegenerationTREM2 and microglia exosomes: a potential highway for pathological tau - Molecular NeurodegenerationTau pathology appears to spread along neuronal networks via the template misfolding of tau by pathological tau conformations. The mechanisms underlying neuron-to-neuron transmission of tau are unclear and recent work demonstrates a role for microglia in the spread of tau pathology. In this Commentary, we discuss a recent study that found that loss of TREM2 expression resulted in exacerbated spread of tau pathology that depended on microglial exosomes. These important findings highlight the role of the microglial endolysosomal system and TREM2 in the spread of tau pathology.

Identifying optimal blood tests for the development of new Alzheimer's therapiesIdentifying optimal blood tests for the development of new Alzheimer's therapiesA new study has identified which blood tests are best at detecting Alzheimer's disease during the earliest stages, and another blood test that is optimal for detecting relevant treatment effects. These findings will speed up the development of new therapies that can slow down the disease progression.

Gargling with povidone-iodine may reduce salivary viral load in COVID-19 patientsGargling with povidone-iodine may reduce salivary viral load in COVID-19 patientsA prospective, randomized, open-level clinical trial demonstrates that gargling with povidone-iodine accelerates viral clearance and reduces saliva infectivity in patients with asymptomatic or mild coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The trial findings have been published in the journal Scientific Reports.

The role of school connectedness in the prevention of youth depression and anxiety: a systematic review with youth consultation - BMC Public HealthThe role of school connectedness in the prevention of youth depression and anxiety: a systematic review with youth consultation - BMC Public HealthBackground School connectedness reflects the quality of students’ engagement with peers, teachers, and learning in the school environment. It has attracted attention from both the health and education sectors as a potentially modifiable protective factor for common mental health problems. However, the extent to which school connectedness may prevent the onset of youth depression or anxiety or promote their remission is unclear. This systematic review examined evidence for prospective relationships between school connectedness and depression and anxiety, and the effect of interventions to improve school connectedness on depression and anxiety. Methods We searched MEDLINE, PsycINFO, PubMed, and ERIC electronic databases for peer-reviewed quantitative longitudinal, or intervention studies published from 2011–21 in English examining relationships between school connectedness and anxiety and/or depression. Participants were 14–24 years old when depression and anxiety outcomes were assessed in any education setting in any country. We partnered with five youth advisers (aged 16–21 years) with lived experience of mental health problems and/or the schooling system in Australia, Indonesia, and the Philippines to ensure that youth perspectives informed the review. Results Our search identified 3552 unique records from which 34 longitudinal and 2 intervention studies were ultimately included. Studies were primarily from the United States of America (69.4%). Depression and anxiety outcomes were first measured at 14 years old, on average. Most studies found a significant protective relationship between higher levels of school connectedness and depressive and/or anxiety symptoms; more measured depression than anxiety. A few studies found a non-significant relationship. Both intervention studies designed to increase school connectedness improved depression, one through improvements in self-esteem and one through improvements in relationships at school. Conclusions These findings su

Jody edited PC Gamer Indie from 2017 to 2018, and he eventually lived up to his promise to play every Warhammer videogame.
