The message came with a graphic illustration, and a promise that surrendering soldiers would receive priority for prisoner exchanges on 24 August –Surrender leaflets have been a staple of warfare for more than a century, and they are increasingly littering the trenches of Ukraine, fired out of artillery shells and dropped by drones.
“If you are trying to break the will of armed forces during an advance the idea that enemies are deserting is huge,” said Tom Colley, a propaganda specialist and senior lecturer in Defence and International Affairs at the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst.
