The site could still be powering the region when coal burning ends.
Operators of a Nottinghamshire power station due to close next year say it could still be powering the region when it stops burning coal. Uniper, which runs the Ratcliffe on Soar Power Station, is due to close next September as part of the Government's aim to end the use of coal power in Britain by October 2024.
Preparations for the closure were initially due to see one unit closing in 2022. But due to factors including the invasion of Ukraine, the Government struck a deal to keep that unit operational until next September, in line with the rest of the station. Plans already revealed for the future of the 265 hectare site include potential projects such as gigafactories producing electric cars, solar power generation, a research and development centre partnered with a local university and a small scale hotel. Such is the scale of expected employment, with thousands of jobs due to be delivered, that some have suggested the extension of Nottingham's tram system to the site.
Guy Phillips, the Team Lead for Business Development Hydrogen at Uniper UK, said: "We're excited about the potential for low carbon hydrogen production at Ratcliffe. We are working closely with regional stakeholders and partners as part of the recently launched East Midlands Hydrogen initiative and there's a really joined up picture emerging with significant potential demand for hydrogen.
"Ratcliffe is in a great location, with good transport links and excellent utilities infrastructure. It has the potential to support the UK’s hydrogen and decarbonisation ambitions, creating new high-skilled employment opportunities and ensuring the site continues to make a valuable contribution to the regional economy."
