James and Giorgio Coia are selling their famous sweet shop - which was opened in 1969.

The owners of a popular Armadale sweet shop that’s been open for 54 years say it ‘wasn’t an easy decision’ after putting it up for sale. The family will still have a presence in the town, however, as their brother Perio, who owns Coia’s Fish and Chip Shop, isn’t part of the plan to sell up.

He commented: “It wasn’t an easy decision because it’s been our lives since we were tots but it’s time for other things. Giorgio is 61, I’m 59 and we want to retire at a time when we’ve still got our health and the ability to go and do some of those things we’ve missed out on over the years. “The rising costs of running a small business make it difficult and looking at everything, it just feels like the right time.”

“Maybe if we’re still trying to sell a year-and-a-half down the line we’d just shut up shop but obviously we don’t want it to come to that. We want to retire and enjoy life - that’s the main reason behind the decision so we don’t want to still be doing it in a few years. The shop opened in 1969 when Nicandro and Concetta decided to start their own business and it’s been in the family’s name ever since. And the family have since become an institution in Armadale and West Lothian.
