New Italy boss Luciano Spalletti has confirmed his first Azzurri squad after he replaced Roberto Mancini last month
Wilfried Gnonto has retained his place in the Italy squad, despite Leeds United's relegation from the Premier League. New Azzurri boss Luciano Spalletti has named the 19-year-old in his 29-man squad for their upcoming EURO 2024 qualifiers against North Macedonia and Ukraine.
Former Manchester City boss Mancini was a huge fan of Gnonto, handing the Leeds forward his national team debut and making him a regular in his squads. With Leeds' relegation from the Premier League and Mancini's departure, questions were asked over whether Gnonto would keep his place in the national team set-up as the Azzurri attempt to qualify for next summer's European Championship. His inclusion in Spalletti's first squad is a timely boost for Gnonto.
Italy currently sit third in qualifying Group C, with the top two automatically qualifying for next summer's tournament. Spalletti's men are currently two points behind Ukraine, having played a game fewer. England, who host Italy at Wembley next month, are six points clear at the top of the group, having won all four games so far.
