The M.E.N's James Holt sits down with pop star Mae Muller to discuss Eurovision, performing in Manchester - and what 'I Wrote A Song' could have sounded like
As I sit down for 20 minutes with pop star and this year's Eurovision finalist Mae Muller, I wonder how I can possibly have enough time to cram in enough questions about her colourful music career to date.
There is no hiding from Mae that I am a fan of hers. I remark about my love for the track, and fondly tell her about a night out I was on with friends in Manchester's Gay Village when, as we were leaving, I Wrote A Song started blasting through the speakers, and so we jolted back inside for one last bop on the dancefloor.
The chance to represent the UK in Eurovision came swiftly afterwards Mae tells me, after management company TaP Music, who were previously in Eurovision partnership with the BBC, reached out to her label and heard the track. "In that moment I wasn't even thinking about anything else apart from just getting through it and trying to be present in the moment. It was like a blackout. I just remember it starting and remember it ending and that's it.
Released later this month, the 17-track body of work has been five years in the making and will tackle themes of love and loss, dating and relationships with 'fearless honesty'. Among the tracklist, which spans an impressive 17 songs, one certainly caught my eye. 'Porn Lied To Us' - a song that, Mae explains, tackles important themes of how pornographic content can damage intimate relationships for young people.
