'I honestly didn't even feel like I had to defend anything because who am I defending myself from?'
Mae Muller told the Echo her Eurovision experience was an unforgettable time in her life and she wouldn;t change any aspect for the world.
The album has been in the aether for years now with the track Breathe acting as one of the oldest singles. Mae added: "I wrote Breathe around five years ago and at that time I was just writing and writing but I always felt like it was a really important song to be on the album. I was going through a bit of like an anxious period and I just wanted to get it off my chest and I feel like it's still just as relatable as it was five years ago.
"But in reality, I was quite scared to show any other side than that. I felt like I had to be this woman to survive this industry and to be a good role model. I think writing this album and just growing up I really learned that like there's a lot of strength in vulnerability and I think you can really hear that in the album so by the end, it's like I've gone through all of these phases.
I Wrote A Song was a runaway hit even outside of the contest, climbing the UK charts to become Mae's first Top 10 hit. Although her Eurovision journey ended on a high, it was a rocky start after ring-wing commentators latched on to her "controversial" views on the country, specifically the Conservative party and their handling of the COVID-19 pandemic. Mae was called "a foul-mouthed Britain-hating fanatic" with some claiming "she should never have been allowed to represent Britain.
