In order to sleep well regularly, expert Katherine Hall says it is best to steer clear of certain foods - and which ones to eat more of

People are being warned to avoid eating certain foods before bed if they hope to get a good night's rest. Sleep expert Katherine Hall has lifted the lid on the sort of foods people struggling to get some shut eye shouldn't eat before hitting the hay.

Spicy Food Hall says: "Whether you’re a fan of covering your Nandos with Extra Hot sauce or a spice hater that can barely stomach a jalapeno, spicy food and the amount of spice we have in our food, is a fairly divisive topic. That being said, for anyone struggling to sleep, avoid spicy foods altogether.

Salty Food Hall says salty food can often go under the radar when talking to people about their nutrition and sleep. "While some are obvious such as high sugar intake, salt can be overlooked," she said. Acidic Food This one may seem obvious to some, and is sure to disappoint those who enjoy a glass of wine shortly before bed, but if we take a deep dive into certain acidic foods, those struggling to sleep will want to avoid some more than others. Hall explains: "Tyramine is an amino acid that is normally a great addition to anyone’s diet as it stimulates natural brain activity.

“While there are a whole host of different remedies out there that allegedly help improve our sleep, some foods can benefit just as much at a fraction of the cost or change in lifestyle," she revealed.
