“As far as I can tell the new transport secretary has been persuaded by those arguments, which would be the wrong decision if this administration is serious about hitting the 2030 target of no petrol and diesel sales, as well as the 2035 target of seeing all new cars sold being ZEVs. “You cannot deliberately reduce zero emission car sales and expect the industry to be ready to get to 100 per cent by your original target.
So far this year there have been 175,614 new electric car sales, which account for 14.5 per cent of all purchases. While the Government did repeat its commitment to its 2030 and 2035 green vehicle targets, a spokesman for the DfT added: “The outcome of the consultation on the zero emission vehicle mandate will be communicated in due course.”
“It’s really important that the new Secretary of State for Transport support manufacturers who are selling a lot of electric cars.”In the UK car buyers ordering an electric vehicle are facing a wait of anywhere between three months and a year, depending on the make and model. “Cars like the Volkswagen ID.3 which were freely available last year now have waiting times of up to 18 months, and dealerships are telling us this problem isn’t going away any time soon.
