Scarborough and Whitby are highlights of the fascinating new Yorkshire coastal route 🌊 The new touring routes have been devised to showcase its off-season highlights and take visitors off the tourist trail
At Café Fish, the North Sea is embraced by Scarborough lobster salad, followed by sea bream and scallops. It’s a far cry from the seaside cafés of my childhood with plastic tablecloths and sticky sauce bottles. “The fish is really fresh,” smiles Kirill Savonins, the softly spoken head chef who moved here from Riga, Latvia – and stayed. “I bought it all myself this morning at the quayside,” he smiles.
“The abbey is more than the sum of its parts: the atmosphere, the haunting skeleton with its bat-wing peaks, and the way the stone subtly changes colour with the weather,” says Mark Williamson, site manager for English Heritage as we stand beyond the quire on the eastern flank. Back in Scarborough, I catch the Beachcomber, the open-top bus that runs along the seafront, to the quieter North Bay. Bathing machines were first introduced here in 1735 to protect the modesty of Georgian bathers.
