Kathleen Jolley, from Wigan, had already made plans to look after her elderly mum after her retirement
A woman who worked from being just 14-year-old was told just months before retirement that she had to work for six more years in a devastating blow.
"I knew I always wanted to retire at 60, I was 59, my mum was 94 and my dad had passed away a few years before and my mum was diagnosed with dementia. The now 65-year-old said: "It was a bit of a double whammy, I wasn't going to be able to get my state pension and I was penalised on my other pension as well. It was quite a shock but by that time I'd been mentally working to leave at 60. I already had 44 years of full contributions, so I didn't see why I didn't have enough contributions to retire with a full pension."
She said: "My local government pension was less than what I expected because of the penalties I faced. The lump sum I was given is what we've had to use to live off. But I just thought for six years I'm going to have to do it because I would rather spend those six years with my mum and have less money.
Close to four million women saw their retirement plans plunged into chaos at the last minute, after the Department for Work and Pensions increased the State Pension age from 60 to 65, and later 66. Due to not being notified of the changes, WASPI women say they have lost the opportunity to plan for their retirement.
Speaking about being part of the WASPI campaign, Kathleen said: "It gives you some kind of hope. But within that time frame, I developed breast cancer and I thought I may not be here to sort of reap the rewards when we win.
