Expect lots of talk about 'vision' but very little detail in the near future
Hunt still hopes to reduce the UK’s tax burden – at its highest level since the Second World War – before next year’s general election. That could be a win-win scenario for the Tories, since they would expect a boost at the polls as well as lay a trap for any future Labour government, which would immediately face a nightmare trying to balance the books without public sector cuts.

They noticed that we all had quite enough excitement during the doomed Truss/Kwarteng pilot episode. So expect lots of talk about “vision” but very little detail in the near future. Yet voters are growing more frustrated.
Polling suggests they have little confidence that either the Conservatives or Labour will get a grip on the cost of living. Many voters don’t know what either party plans to do in power after next year’s big vote.
