'Pride is an important opportunity to say we’re standing together, we’re here and we’re queer'

This year's Manchester Pride has ground-breaking with been one of the most diverse line-ups in recent years, focusing on women, trans people, and those of diverse backgrounds.

But as a sleepy Sunday morning turned into a buzzy afternoon at the heart of this year’s event, the M.E.N went out into the village to ask, ‘what does Pride mean to you?’Russell T Davies, acclaimed TV writer “Pride means a great celebration, all our lives are worth celebrating. More and more, the world is darkening around us, I feel, and it’s now becoming more of a protest.

“Worldwide, there’s very many countries which are square one with HIV and AIDs. I’m very proud to be the patron of the George House Trust in Manchester, which is the north west HIV and AIDs charity. “And within medicine, PrEP [the preventative HIV therapy] is still new, there’s still great areas of research, knowledge, information coming out. It’s still a really busy and valid charity.”Brooke Mah, 33, from Sheffield “This year’s Pride is different to other Pride events I’ve been to because it’s the first time I’ve brought my nephew. He’d been having a bit of trouble at school and I decided he needed to realise the community that’s here and will support him.

“It’s nice to see friends dressing up how they want and pleasing themselves, what’s wrong with that? As long as you’re not hurting anybody.Dean Collinson, 32, and Alex Collinson, 30, from Wigan “We met at Manchester Pride seven years ago and now we’re married! Pride means everyone coming together as a community, showing we’re not afraid – especially in light of recent events like the stabbings in London.

“It’s the ability to be yourself, to dress as uncomfortably or comfortably as you want, without the fear of being judged. We’re celebrating the freedoms our ancestors fought for.
