Two weeks of no swim warnings, two raw sewage discharges, and Blackpool is still waiting to be told it's safe to go back in the water

As the sun beats down on Blackpool promenade, a young family with a baby splash about as the sea laps the beach.

United Utilities had been carrying out repair work on a burst pipe at Fleetwood. While the damaged pipe did not contribute to a sewage leak, it saw the network overwhelmed while running at reduced capacity. United Utilities had called the incident an "exceptional circumstance" that left no option. A spokesperson told LancsLive work is ongoing to fix the fractured pipe and return to full capacity.

On Thursday , Blackpool was typically busy for a sunny afternoon. The town’s seafront was filled with visitors and locals, taking in the vastness of the Irish Sea and the tranquillity of the beach. Sisters Michelle Fisher and Elaine Marshall were on a trip to Blackpool from Wigan, and had heard of the warnings, But the duo were concerned by the amount of people swimming in the sea which they described this as "dirty" and somewhere they wouldn't let their children swim.

Up towards the Comedy Carpet, many people were sitting down and basking in the afternoon sun, enjoying the quiet season before Blackpool is filled with visitors and children on their summer break. On the beach itself, a few children and adults could be seen paddling in the water, seemingly unaware that warnings have been instated.

Eti was walking along the promenade, along with her dog Snowy, having travelled from Leeds for the day. She heard the news about the warnings in Scarborough and assumed that Blackpool may have its own issues too. She said: "I've seen them paddling, only one or two. Some people won't listen though will they? Until they come across it."

“We are reinforcing that message across our social media channels, leveraging our media colleagues and contacts, and using our networks as much as we can to ensure as many people as possible are aware of this advice. We have also increasing the size and number of the signs along the seafront.
