Two superb goals see watfordfc Women come from behind to beat Oxford 2-1 and go top of the league to keep their title hopes alive

There were heroes all over the pitch for Watford, but in Gemma Davison they had the star turn. She had that extra class and finesse that meant Oxford were never quite sure what to do with her. Stand off and she ran at them, get too close and she spun and got away.

When Bianca Baptiste thumped home the equaliser from the corner of the box she can’t have imagined that within a few minutes her epic strike might be bettered – but arguably the 30-yard dipping drive on the run from substitute Araya Dennis did just that. However, two wins from their last two games for Oxford will deny Watford the league crown, despite this epic victory this evening.

Shortly after Davison swung over a ball from the left and Baptiste did well to stretch and reach it at the back post, but she couldn’t get power on her header and Rose Kite saved. In the 55th minute superb determination and a piece of true skill from substitute Dennis saw her win the ball back on the left and then jink inside. Her cross-come-shot was palmed away by Kite and Head scooped the loose ball over the bar.

But if that goal was a cracker then the one that made it 2-1 in the 71st minute was possibly even better.
