A minor detail about the House of Lords reveals an awful lot

This process is completely inimical to the winner-takes-all machismo of Westminster. Governments invariably hate it. But the problem does not simply lie with the Tories. It lies with Labour as well. Over the past year the party has shown absolutely no understanding of why the Lords works.

In 2022 Labour announced that it would abolish the Chamber and replace it with a “democratic assembly of nations and regions”. God knows what that entails, but it would very likely lead to another version of the Commons – party political types who lack expertise and will do what they’re told.the Chamber full of Labour peers. “It is going to be a hard slog to take our legislation through the Lords given the inbuilt Tory majority at the moment,” a Labour source said on Tuesday.

It’s a foolish and deceptive comment. The Tories might be the largest party, but they do not have a majority in the Chamber. It’s also deeply muddled. Labour’s plan seems to be that it will cram the Chamber full of loyalists and abolish it at the same time. What it really suggests is that the party simply does not know what it wants. It clearly has no understanding of why the Lords functions well and no desire to see it continuing to do so when it finally has its hands on executive power.

We’re lost in a pitiful game where the Government undermines the Lords and the official opposition fails to understand it. And that’s no coincidence. It’s the one part of our system which works. No wonder they hold it in disdain.
