Glasgow “must redouble” its efforts to decarbonise transport in the city, a senior councillor has said
, after new data showed emissions were higher in 2021 than pre-pandemic.
The most recent data, released by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, revealed that, in 2021, emissions in Glasgow totalled 2,435 kilo-tonnes of carbon dioxide . Transport emissions also increased “by 2.9% over the pre-pandemic year of 2019”. “Emissions from motorways and A-roads increased by 14% between 2020 and 2021. However, emissions from minor roads increased by 38.4% over the same period,” the report added.
“This situation needs to be monitored closely but the basic fact remains that just under a third of Glasgow’s 2.4million carbon emissions every year are related to transport. People’s “reluctance to use public transport” due to “the respiratory risk that might have been perceived” is “most likely” to have an impact, he said.
“When these projects start to take hold, that will hopefully dramatically increase the rate of reduction.”
