'How we get about Glasgow must change.'
Glasgow “must redouble” its efforts to decarbonise transport in the city, a senior councillor has said, after new data showed emissions were higher in 2021 than pre-pandemic.
A report to councillors stated this was a 12.8% increase from 2020, when pandemic restrictions were in place, but a 42% decrease from a 2006 baseline and a 1.8% decrease from 2019. Cllr Millar said: “What is concerning is that transport-related emissions were greater in 2021 than prior to the pandemic in 2019 with the biggest rise linked to traffic on minor roads.
During a meeting of the council’s net zero committee on Tuesday, an official said analysis had shown there has “been significant increase in the use of private vehicles post-pandemic”. Asked about the city’s aim to hit net-zero emission target by 2030, the official said: “Most of the low hanging fruit has been plucked hence why we are talking about climate finance in the billions and projects of that scale.
