It has never been as difficult to balance the books
Having a coffee out is still one of life's simple affordable pleasures. But one Nottingham cafe owner says she would have to charge £7 for a cappuccino if she was to hit the same profit margins as six months ago.
"We are probably one of the few places in Nottingham that still give a free chocolate with our coffees as I really believe that eating whilst drinking helps you enjoy the drink more… and again we won’t be compromising on this either." Mrs Tryner said she felt very positive about the business after coming out of the pandemic. "We felt like a better business, a bit more streamlined and a bit more motivated and it has worked. We've had more people through the door, we've got some exciting products on the shelves. It's just we're working a lot harder to make it all pay. I don't think anyone will pay £7 for a cappuccino which is where we need to get to if we don't get the costs under control.
"The fact we are getting people in through the door which has always been the hard battle for us is fantastic but to make the books work it's the hardest it's ever been and I know it's going to get harder." Greg Campher, of Nottingham coffee roasters Outpost, said the the public needed to brace themselves for imminent price rises after the cost of beans rose from £1.60 to £3.40 a pound. "There is more pricing pressure coming for sure. The £5 flat white is probably not too far in the distant future. I think cafes and coffee generally will see quite a big step up in the next three to four months.
