“Generation replacement is definitely happening,” says Sophie Stowers, a polling expert for the research group UK in a Changing Europe. “Since 2016, some older voters who might have voted for Brexit have died and younger voters are coming of age, which is one of the reasons we are seeing a shift toward more pro-EU polling in recent years,” she says. In 2022, the research group reported a 35 per cent aggregate decline in support for Brexit since 2016.
Now, at 18, he is dedicated to reversing the vote and bringing back Erasmus, the EU scheme that allowed UK students to study in Europe for free. “The vote put up so many unnecessary barriers, especially for young people,” he says. “We weren’t given a choice. I mean, could you imagine if you were 18 on the day the referendum rules were implemented, hoping to study abroad and then the next day, this rule just happens? You’ve had all these opportunities taken away from you,” he says.
“People think it’s all flag wavers and people who wear those blue berets. I think they look at those people and think they look too extreme or too divisive – but that is a minority. The young people who join our Rejoin marches are just everyday people.”
