From Monday, Eurostar is rolling out a new fast-track, biometric check-in process that could see passengers pass through London St Pancras International‘s gates to the cross-Channel rail operator’s departure lounge in seconds SophieLamTravel reports
Both have been stalled as stakeholders in the EU and beyond grapple with implementing the system at space-constrained border points, such as Eurostar’s London St Pancras International terminus.
Cazenave said that the station is expecting the arrival of 24 EES kiosks for non-EU nationals in the coming months, although there is currently no date for the system to go live. London St Pancras was the largest enclosed space in the world when it opened in 1868, but Eurostar’s international terminus within the station is the equivalent of just three tennis courts. Within that space, Eurostar processes on average 2,000 check-ins per hour, and more than 11 million passengers per year.
Post-Brexit border checks – which have added around 15 seconds to the process per passenger – have forced the operator to reduce capacity to avoid serious congestionCazenave said that the SmartCheck project is integral to Eurostar’s growth plan, removing barriers and congestion from the station. Eurostar Group, which incorporates both Eurostar and Thalys since the two companies merged earlier this year, aims to carry 30 million passengers per year by 2030.
So far, around 150 customers have used the opt-in service. Data is stored on the user’s phone until they press “ready to travel”, when details are sent to
