On World Suicide Prevention Day, Dr Raphael Ogbolu has issued advice to parents on how to talk to youngsters about mental health
A leading mental health doctor has issued a warning over soaring suicide rates across Lancashire - especially among younger people.
“Lancashire and South Cumbria has some of the highest suicide rates nationally, which is why it’s important to equip people with some simple advice on how to approach the topic," he said. Today , is World Suicide Prevention Day which sparked Dr Ogbolu's advice. Mental health practitioners from Blackburn staged a march from Darwen on Friday to raise awareness and encourage people to seek help.
Dr Ogbolu's tips to parents, and others, on how to talk to people struggling with their mental health 1. Start the conversation and ask open questions where people have to say more than yes or no. A good example is “How are you feeling?” or “What has been on your mind?” 4. Try not to judge, even if you are shocked, upset or scared, or indeed struggling to understand what is making them feel suicidal. They may have taken a big step by telling you.
