Thousands of tourists each year will peer down from the glass floor at Blackpool Tower Eye at the Comedy Carpet.
At first glance, the huge white space on the promenade just looks like random words have been tossed onto it. But it is so much more that. The Comedy Carpet is an attraction in itself, drawing in the crowds just as much as the world-famous landmark that looms over it. The colourful floor is covered with hundreds of quotes by famous comedians and is one of the biggest pieces of public art to be commissioned in the UK. The celebration of comedy was designed and created by artist Gordon Young.
The carpet immortalises the best and most recognisable jokes, songs and comedy catchphrases in British comedy history. It represents 1,000 writers and comedians all placed in a seemingly organised chaos in different fonts and sizes across the huge space on Tower Festival Headland. The space, located a few steps from the beach, is a hub for Blackpool's free family events including the annual Air Show, Blackpool by the Sea and Illuminations Switch-On. It was unveiled in 2011 by the resort's favourite comedian Ken Dodd.
