The Tory party could look very different indeed next year 🖊️ katyballs via ipaperviews
It reflects a trend that has been growing for some time. In the 2019 election, one in three new Conservative candidates were local, the same in 2017. In 2015 it was three in five. But it is – understandably – leaving many of the Westminster types a little dismayed. Plenty of Tory special advisers are hoping to make the jump to a constituency this time around, but unless they have a local connection that corresponds to a winnable seat, they fear they will be unsuccessful.
“Everyone knows there is a candidate selection problem right now,” says one Tory insider. “No-one seems sure what to do about it.” Is a party largely made up of former local councillors such a bad thing? “All things in moderation,” says one Red Wall MP. Wise owls argue that it would leave the party lacking in the numbers required to be future junior ministers. Others say they are more likely to be small picture than big picture –But it’s not just concerns about the party being overpopulated with local candidates. If the current trend sticks, it will also be a predominantly male intake.
