will stage the world’s first carbon-removed gig in February at the 02 arena in Greenwich, south London, organisers claim.
“Carbon removals could be a game changing step on the path to helping the global live events industry to genuinely reach net zero,” Sam Booth, director of sustainability at AEG Europe, told“Large-scale carbon-free events do not currently exist so, until they become a reality, we need to find ways of mitigating the impacts of what we do.
He says carbon-removal events are different from a carbon-neutral events, which match emissions with an equivalent number of offsets or “carbon credits” – that can vary wildly and have been associated withBy contrast, this technique calculates and physically removes the same amount of carbon as it generates.
The 1975, which formed in Wilmslow, Cheshire in 2002, are the latest band to seek to drive down the carbon footprint of their tours. They added that they have started to run the entire show – including audio, lights and lasers “from an electric battery system that allows us to use 100 per cent renewable energy as efficiently as possible” and that they have been electric vehicles and alternative fuels “wherever we can, as well as reducing waste and plastic usage to a minimum.”
