Concerns had been raised about 'driver confrontations'

A £35,000 scheme to stop “Mexican stand-offs” in streets in Sefton could get the green light next week.

That plan failed to go ahead after the results of the consultation showed a response rate that was “much lower than expected for a scheme which would supposedly assist the residents.”Some of the concerns raised by residents responding to the consultation involved “driver confrontations”, with people also stating that parking problems were worse in the evening and overnight “due to the fact that car ownership by the residents themselves was so high”.

The results of that consultation also showed a “fairly low” response rate. Of those that did give their views, the majority were in favour of a scheme, although concerns were raised that having all roads going one way in the same direction could cause further problems. A council report said the scheme was aimed at countering the problem of on-street parking in the narrow road leading to “numerous alleged ‘Mexican stand-offs’ due to two vehicles travelling in opposite directions and both drivers refusing to back up to let the other pass.”
