Caolan Boyd-Munce's sensational first goal for the Saints saw the Paisley side sail past Motherwell and seal a League Cup quarter-final spot.
The Buddies were hoping to make a quick impression on the visitors and managed just that as the former Middlesbrough talent slammed in a sublime long-range effort to break the deadlock with less than ten minutes on the clock.
St Mirren were again without skipper Mark O'Hara, with former Middlesbrough midfielder Boyd-Munce continuing to deputise in the middle of the park. Mikael Mandron had his first sight of goal against his former club on the 20-minute mark, nodding into Kelly's hands from a teasing Scott Tanser cross. The Saints looked to repeat their early goal trick at the start of the second half. Boyd-Munce pinged in a clever cross that Mandron fired just wide.
Gogic impressed throughout and made an important clearance from a Blair Spittal cross that looked destined to find its mark at the back post.
