Scholes insisted Man United were a cup team after Wednesday's Champions League defeat at Bayern Munich and his words echo a previous claim from Keane.
A third consecutive defeat for Manchester United came at Bayern Munich on Wednesday and Paul Scholes' claim that they are nothing more than a cup team should concern supporters.
Rasmus Hojlund pulled one back after half-time but a penalty allowed Harry Kane to renew a two-goal lead minutes later. Casemiro scored twice in a chaotic final few minutes, however they came either side of Mathys Tel's clinical effort.ALSO READ: What Scholes expected from United in summer transfer window that they didn't do
"I think this is almost going to be an identical season to last year - they are a cup team. They could possibly win the FA Cup or the Carabao Cup, they are just not at this level yet. I think the summer has hindered them getting where that next level is and we saw tonight that they are below this level."
It will concern supporters that Scholes' point echoed the same claim made by Roy Keane almost two years ago. Amid a heated argument in November 2021 regarding the merits of signing Cristiano Ronaldo, the former midfielder claimed United were only good enough to compete for the cups.
