A Nottinghamshire couple locked in a check-in dispute with Ryanair have narrowly lost out on compensation after taking the airline to court. Jo McCarthy and Brian Willett said they were left with no choice but to go head-to-head with the company at Nottingham County Court on Tuesday September 19.
But the couple were blocked from completing the process, with Ms McCarthy's email and phone number both being rejected. She and her husband tried to resolve the issue with the airline, trying them by phone, webchat and turning up at one of their desks at Luton Airport, but were unsuccessful. Ryanair, represented in court by William Rees-Mogg, argued this could be due to the complainant accidentally clicking the wrong language while booking. The couple eventually decided to book alternative flights to Sardinia through the fear that their holiday plans would fall apart.
"Her fear was that she would turn up on the day and be refused boarding. Many people in her position would've done the same thing. But it was possible for Ms McCarthy to attend Vienna and board."
