The Royal and Derngate theatre in Northampton has been closed over safety concerns after Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete was discovered in their foyers. A survey found the presence of RAAC, a material used in construction in many buildings between the 1960s and 1990s, which could lead to structural issues in the building.

Already more than 150 schools across the UK have been forced to partially close just days before students are heading back for the new school year because they may contain crumbling and unsafe RAAC. These include the Northampton International Academy, which has closed 18 classrooms, its sixth form and a staff room while they check the roofing.
