George Austin persuaded a 64 year old to give him £25,000 for a new roof she didn't need 😤
A fraudulent roofer who charged a grieving pensioner £25,000 for just £300 worth of work faces selling his house to pay back his ill-gotten gains.
In a separate scam, Austin took £18,500 for work on a fibreglass roof to fix a leak. Lancashire Trading Standards said the work was 'poor and overcharged' and the leak had 'apparently not been touched'. The bogus builder then took money from a very ill man for a back door he never delivered. He also tried to obtain £5,500 from a retired woman, claiming that a new re-roof was needed, when her existing roof was of excellent quality.
Preston Crown Court has now ruled that he must use the equity in his house to pay back £40,500 of his bogus gains to the victims involved. It follows a proceeds of crime hearing held on Friday . "This prosecution sends out a clear signal that rogue traders are not welcome in Lancashire, and that if you target our residents, our Trading Standards team will target you and you may lose your ill-gotten gains."
