Malik Al Nasir by the Pier Head in Liverpool, a location that played a significant role in the transatlantic slave trade to face at every level of your existence. From people looking at you in the street and wondering where you came from – I mean, “Where do you ‘really’ come from?” – to being told to “go back to where you came from”, children have to adapt to this othering from kindergarten onwards.

Questions of identity affect your development as a child – who you can and can’t play with, where you can and can’t go in your hometown and, in many cases, what you can and can’t do. In 2008, at the age of 42, I finally set out in search of my roots, armed only with a few details from some of my father’s old seamen friends. This was a personal quest to find out who I was, and where I belonged after a lifetime of being told why I didn’t belong in the place of my birth.
