Footage of the controversial drop goal that helped Huddersfield Giants secure victory over Leeds Rhinos has emerged as the saga regarding the contest continues to rumble on. The Rhinos' top-six hopes suffered a significant setback after losing to their West Yorkshire rivals, though it wasn't without controversy.
The game was in the balance with three minutes remaining as Ian Watson's side held an 18-12 lead. A converted score at that point would have seen Leeds take the game to Golden Point. However, the Giants would end up sealing the game with a drop goal from Jake Connor. That, however, has become a major talking point, with the Rhinos adamant the one-pointer did not go through the sticks.
After the game, head coach Rohan Smith said: "Everybody has said it didn't go through, barring the decision makers. A couple of Huddersfield players said it missed by a few metres. In the end, we had chances, but some days, it's hard to overcome that. There was a huge amount of spirit in the second half. Trying to overcome a drop goal that didn't come through."
Now, the clip has spread across social media, with everyone having their say on the matter. The footage itself is inconclusive but you can see the bemusement of the Leeds players, particularly Luke Hooley, after the decision is made, while Jake Connor appears to have a smile on his face as he returns to his position.It was one of several controversial calls in the game. Leeds had a try disallowed after an alleged Sam Walters knock-on, though it appeared to his foot on the footage.
Smith was frustrated with the performance of the officials in general. "We might have to wait till pre-season to get people to play the ball properly. I see other coach's press conferences. They are all guessing, like me. Huddersfield were slowing the game down, kicking it into touch when they had a man less. I thought we had them for energy and spirit, but a couple of those situations were outdone out of our control.
