We went pumpkin picking at one of Lancashire's most famous patches home to Jack O' Lantern's two feet wide
While it may not be Diagon Alley from the most famous wizarding world on the planet, Pumpkin Alley near Ormskirk certainly has achieved its own fame and fortune in its own way.
In fact, with no less than 15 acres of organically grown pumpkins, the West Lancs farm, based at Poplar Farm, is brimming with bees, insects, flowers and nature’s harvest, with not a single pesticide in sight. Joe tells us: “The biggest ones probably will be about two foot across in diameter, and in weight terms, they will be about 20 to 30 kilos.”
Reports of pumpkin penury in the run up to Halloween have not affected Lancashire, despite shortages elsewhere in the country. And that's partly because the weather has been kinder to the North, says Joe, whereas those in the South were hit by hot weather in the summer. He adds: “Supermarkets will pack in three pumpkins to an area where I’d put one, so I only get a third as many per area and that’s why they get bigger. Supermarket varieties like Jack O' Lantern only get mini football size, but that’s because they have no root to grow, and also my plants just produce one pumpkin, but a really good fruit.”
Other top tips are to place your pumpkin somewhere ‘warm and airy,’ again like a tomato, at around 15 degrees, to dry it out, allowing any marks to heal, with Pumpkin Alley’s pumpkins being ‘just right for Halloween,’ if picked now and then dried out. The patch has this year ditched ticketing, brought in last year to reduce Covid risk and crowding, and it's back to business post pandemic, with free parking and free admission.
