Over the past seven years or so, patches have sprouted across the country, fuelled on the farmers’ part by a wish for an extra income stream and on the visitors’ by a desire to enjoy a day out and bewith eye-catching pumpkins. Somehow, those orange ribbed beauties tick all the boxes, especially when captured against specially orchestrated backdrops such as hay bales, vintage carts and tractors.
And while most patches say they offer pick your own, the “pick” is really in the sense of choose, as harvesting – a health and safety official’s nightmare, involving sharp knives – happens weeks before patches open.One of the more bizarre attractions, imported, like the idea of the patch itself, from the US, is the pumpkin cannon.
