Two cases of Dengue fever have been diagnosed in the last week in the Lombardy and Lazio regions
Health authorities have highlighted cases of a potentially lethal disease have been discovered in a tourist hotspot. The Italian Ministry of Health said that two cases of Dengue fever were detected on August 18 and 20.
The ministry said: “The two patients are on the mend and all the procedures for the prophylaxis and disinfestation of the places involved have been activated.
Both cases were reported to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control . The Dengue virus is transmitted by the Aedes albopictus mosquito, now permanently present in most of Europe. Autochthonous cases have recently been identified in France. Since the beginning of 2023, 79 imported cases have been identified in Italy.
Most people who get dengue won’t have symptoms. But for those that do, the most common symptoms are high fever, headache, body aches, nausea and rash. Most will also get better in 1–2 weeks. Some people develop severe dengue and need care in a hospital. Individuals who are infected for the second time are at greater risk of severe dengue.
