Evidence of Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (RAAC) has been discovered at three locations within Crosshouse Hospital.

Potentially dangerous concrete which is at 'risk of collapse' has been discovered in Crosshouse Hospital.

NHS Ayrshire & Arran insist that the RAAC planks found were not "generally distressed," adding that they did not "appear to have deflected excessively." Bosses insisted they will be regularly inspected in line with report recommendations. RAAC was commonly used in construction between the 1950s and 1990s. The cheap 'bubbly' material only has a lifespan of around 30 years and it was mostly used for flat roofs but also in walls and floors. Alarm bells were raised across the UK after a roof caved in without warning at Singlewell Primary School in Kent in 2018.

Nicola Graham, Director of Infrastructure and Support Services, said: "Surveys across the NHS Ayrshire & Arran estate have identified Reinforced Aerated Autoclaved Concrete planks within three locations at University Hospital Crosshouse. No other locations of RAAC construction have been found to date.
