Pay increase costing 'billions more than government budgeted for', says PM
"I'm not prepared to put up people's taxes and I don't think it would be responsible to borrow more," the prime minister continues. The first is to"increase the charges" migrants have to pay when they apply for visas. Mr Sunak also said it wouldn't be fair to fund these uplifts with higher borrowing, because this causes inflation to soar;
"Today's offer is final. There will be no more talks on pay. We will not negotiate again on this year's settlement and no amount of strikes will change our decision," the prime minister said.Pat McFadden, for Labour, began his response by praising the efforts of NHS staff, teachers, police and members of the Armed Forces.
"This deal will allow teachers and school leaders to call off strike action and resume normal relations with government," it added.
