Mr Sunak said “no final decision has been reached” yet on public sector pay, but that the Government would be “guided by three principles” – fairness, budget and responsibility. The Prime Minister hinted that the Government would try to restrain from using fiscal measures to fund pay rises for the public sector, saying: “It’s absolutely vital we bring inflation down. Government should not fuel the fire by excessive borrowing at a time when that would just make the situation worse.”
