Stranded passengers are spotted looking mournfully up at departures boards as yet more delays and cancellations are announced

has said it has applied traffic flow restrictions due to the “technical issue” affecting air traffic control.

Passengers have been stranded on runways and trapped inside airports for hours after a national failure caused chaos up and down the country's airports. Pictures have been revealed of restless crowds building in Gatwick, Heathrow and Dublin Airports, with UK passengers also affected abroad on their way to British Airway flights.

The photos revela the despair shared by unlucky travellers. Passengers huddled in queues, or sat on the floor, looking mournfully up at departures boards as delays and cancellations have been announced throughout the day .This comes while Transport Secretary Mark Harper said the “technical issue...has now been resolved”. On Twitter, he said that he and Aviation Minister Charlotte Vere were “continuing to work with NATS to help them manage affected flights and support passengers.
