Branches in Arnold and Hucknall will shut for good
The final Wilko stores are set to close this weekend - and Nottinghamshire shops are among the list. A total of 41 stores will shut for good on Sunday, October 8.
This includes branches in Front Street, Arnold, and Central Walk, Hucknall. The Nottinghamshire-based budget retailer has been closing down all of its 400 stores around the country after it collapsed into administration two months ago. A total of 71 Wilko stores were bought from the administrators PwC by Poundland, and the first 10 rebranded shops reopened last month. Rescued stores in Melton Mowbray, Matlock, Chepstow, Kimberley, in Nottinghamshire, Worcester, Ellesmere Port, Brigg, Redruth, Ferndown and Pontypool were to open on Saturday, October 7.Poundland said that 200 former Wilko staff had been offered jobs in the rescued stores and more Wilko staff are expected to be taken as further stores reopen.
Wilko was founded by JK Wilkinson as Wilkinson’s - a hardware store in Leicester, in 1930. The last Wilko stores in Leicester both closed on Thursday .
