Research by ESRIDublin suggests the productivity gap between NI and the Republic of Ireland has widened to 40%
The research from Dublin's Economic and Social Research Institute suggests the north-south gap has opened up over the last 20 years.
The activities of these firms artificially inflates Ireland's GDP and consequently flatters its productivity performance. This includes things like the manufacture of chemicals and pharmaceuticals and the IT and communications sector. The exercise suggests that productivity in Ireland grew by an average of 0.2% per year between 1998 and 2020.This means that having started with similar levels of productivity in 2020 a big gap has opened up over the last 20 years.
