Reginald Riley had been out to pick flowers for his mum, who was feeling unwell

It was 4:15pm and he was carrying a small bunch of wild flowers he had picked for his mum, who was feeling unwell. Mrs Clara Riley had been so poorly her husband Giles had been called home from work at the Midland Railway to take care of his wife at their home in Westminster Road, Morecambe.

He lifted the child up and asked what had happened, but Reginald made no response. Mr Tidewell called to two women, who were staying in caravans nearby, to look after the young boy while he ran for a doctor. Sadly it was too late to save poor Reginald. Christina Stephenson, who lived in Scott Road, said she knew the little boy and had often seen him walking from the field with flowers he had picked. On the day he died, she saw him running towards the field with his cap in his hand between 5:30pm and 6pm. He was alone, and did not appear to be distressed or concerned.

Dr Ashton carried out a post mortem and found bruising to his face, leg and hip, and a wound to his right temple which cut through to the bone. But it was the injury to the nape of Reginald's neck which was believed to have caused his death. The 1 1/4 inch injury was so deep it had severed his spinal cord, and the clean edges suggested it had been inflicted with a knife or small chisel from behind.
