Police restrained him with handcuffs and leg restraints before he was transported to Whiston Hospital

The Independent Office for Police Conduct is investigating Merseyside Police after a man, in his 30s, died after being arrested in St Helens. Police were called to reports of concern for welfare, on Sunday, August 20 at Gartons Lane.

They arrived at the scene and allegedly spoke to the man, who appeared agitated. Officers then restrained him with handcuffs and leg restraints and he was transported to Whiston Hospital by paramedics. The man remained in hospital receiving treatment until he died on Tuesday, August 22. The IOPC has confirmed that they received a mandatory referral from the force due to the fact the man had been detained by officers prior to becoming unwell.

IOPC Regional Director Emily Barry said: "Our thoughts are with the man’s family and friends all those affected by his death. Given the man fell unwell shortly after being detained and died, it is important that an independent investigation is carried out to establish all of the circumstances surrounding this incident, including the actions and decision-making of officers."

A police cordon remains in place on Gartons Lane, with a mobile police station and forensics at the scene. A second cordon has been set up, just around the corner, on Lever Street. Floral tributes have been placed outside a house inside a cordon on Lever Street.
