Liz Truss: she came; she led; she faltered.
It worked in 2016 when Brexit campaigners spoke of sunlit uplands and accused anyone attempting to pore over the data and evidence of “talking Britain down”. It worked in 2019 when Boris Johnson, again, talked about all the great and golden things that were just on the horizon, if only he got elected as leader. It worked this summer when Rishi Sunak was called patronising and off-putting for repeatedly trying to tell Liz Truss that her economic plans were unrealistic and doomed to fail.
Like a woman bleaching her hair and cutting her own fringe to avoid quitting a bad job or ending a dying relationship, they did something stupid because it was easier than facing up to the depth of their problems.
