If the years 2019-2022 belonged Jurgen Klopp's first great Liverpool team, the coming years provides a new-look, 'reinvented' squad the opportunity to grow together

It's been a positive start for a new-look Liverpool entering the next phase of Jurgen Klopp's evolution.

A quartet of new players have arrived to complete a redecorating of the midfield engine room. Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai's early summer additions were added to by the arrivals of Wataru Endo and Ryan Gravenberch later on in the window to counteract the departures of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, James Milner, Naby Keita, Jordan Henderson and Fabinho.

Those five players - along with Roberto Firmino, who also left as a free agent - will always be synonymous with a trophy-laden era between 2019 and 2022 when Klopp's team won every top level piece of silverware available to them, including a first league title for 30 years, a sixth European Cup and a first-ever Club World Cup.

The significant turnover, however, has gathered pace in the last 12 to 18 months, leading to what Klopp now calls 'Liverpool Reloaded'. Since January 2022, the Reds have signed Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo alongside the aforementioned midfield quartet, giving the Reds a fresh and vibrant look to it in the summer of 2023.

“We pretty much had to reinvent the team," Klopp said recently. "The midfield is all ready and will be completely new. We had to do that in a season where we didn’t qualify for the Champions League, which has a massive impact. I know people expect it to be different but it is how it is. I really think we did good business, the players we brought in are really good, will help the team. We are less experienced but that is normal, but we are full of desire and I love this team.

After four games last season, the Reds found themselves with just five points and down in ninth in the Premier League. The 9-0 battering of Bournemouth was a peculiar result to follow on from a stuttering start that saw them draw with Fulham and Crystal Palace before being beaten at Manchester United. The previous year saw Klopp's side pick up 10 from 12 with a goalless draw with Chelsea in the mix alongside comfortable victories over Norwich City, Burnley and Leeds United.
